Favourite Christmas Song | Blogmas Day 2 |

My favourite Christmas song is a little different from what most people would expect. It’s not something that I suppose many people relate to Christmas but I’ve loved it ever since I heard it and I sing it to myself quite a lot. It’s “What If” by Kate Winslet from the the 2001 version of A Christmas Carol.

A bittersweet song to reflect the thoughts of Belle and her parting with Ebeneezer Scrooge; I’ve always found it hauntingly beautiful and it is one of my favourite things to sing from the top of my lungs! And has even led me to create a youtube cover…. I think it’s a song that many people can relate to after a relationship has broken down and you’re questioning if one small thing had been different how could things have turned out. At the time I couldn’t really connect with the meaning of the song itself as I was around 10 and hadn’t been through anything that would make me understand completely what the character was going through. But I’ve always been able to empathise with the fact that it seemed like the relationship had crumbled and ended without either side really wanting it to go that way.

I think the part of the song that really hits home is:

“Well I tried
But I had to draw the line”

It shows a certain level of bravery to leave something and someone that you still find important but if nothing has changed and you remain unhappy it can be best to leave and end things before it goes too far. Which is the main meaning behind the entirety of the song.

I think I might be one of the only people to see this a Christmas song as, either, people don’t know it is from Christmas Carol: The Movie or they are unaware of its existence at all, something that I try to change whenever I can. Although it is a little sombre and is about being unable to change the path you’ve taken yourself down, it always makes me feel like Christmas is just around the corner.

Hasta la fuego
