Am I Cut Out To Be A Writer?

It’s something that often plays on my mind. When I want to try and edit, or when I have a new idea. But am I cut out to be a writer? It’s what I’ve always wanted, as long as I can remember at least. But does that mean I have what it takes? Will I really be able to make anything of myself with my writing?

I don’t know if it’s a mild form of impostor syndrome? Maybe. Or maybe, just maybe I’m not cut out to be a writer. Maybe wanting something with all that you are, isn’t enough to get you to where you need to be. You know that I’ve been going through my first edits but I don’t know if that’s helping, or making things worse.

What Can You Do?

Even though I am currently feeling as though that I haven’t got what it takes. I’m trying to ignore it. I’m trying to take consolation in the fact that if I feel like I’m not good enough, then maybe I’m the right amount of enough. You know?

The best plan of action, is to get my writing out there. To see if it’s something that people like. That might be enjoyed by others. I’ve been trying to join some writers’ circles to try and potentially find myself a critique partner, or some other beta readers. I know I’ve passed my writing out to some people, but I think I need some other writers to read my work. To see if it’s worth anything. I have joined Scribophile and Absolute Write, but I’ve not used them to their full potential yet.

Taking A Leap

I think my main problem is that although I want to write, I don’t know if anyone wants to read it. I can mock up some mini-scenes, and share a couple of lines on twitter but it doesn’t mean it will matter. And I don’t know the best way to get my writing out there.

So I guess this is a post on my own writing insecurities. I’m hoping that this will be the first step for me to move into the right direction with my writing, and give it that extra lease of life. I love writing, and I can’t imagine my life without some from of writing. But I can’t deny that I really want to see my words in print, and my name on the spine of a book.

Advice To Give

Don’t give up. I think that’s the most important thing to say. If you want to write, then write. If you think that you aren’t cut out to be a writer then maybe you need some confidence to show you that you are.

Join a local writing group, find like-minded people on the internet and share your words with people near and far. Even letting family and friends read your works might be enough to convince you. I know it’s what I’m going to be trying.
