When an app gives you some information, why not take advantage of it? I’ve been using Spotify for a good few years now, and there’s always been some sort of recap. Or, playlists to say what you’ll like in the next year based on the past year. For 2018 they gave you an entire playlist dedicated to your most played songs of the year. So what were my top 10 Spotify songs in 2018?
1) …Ready For It? – Taylor Swift
As with any Taylor fan, when Reputation came out I was a little obsessed with it. I loved the whole feel of the album, and the change up from the previous work released. With this song being the first on the album, it make sense that it’s also at the top of this list. With the beat counting you in to the start of this song, I like how it opens the album and also this playlist.
2) The Greatest Showman – The Greatest Showman Soundtrack
I think this was potentially my favourite film that I saw last year. I loved every second of it, and as soon as I could I found the soundtrack and had it on repeat for a few days. It has slowly become one of my favourite film soundtracks. Even now I’m singing it in my head as I type. I loved the fluctuations in tone and speed to keep your interest pulled in . As much as I love this song, I still don’t know all the words.
3) Never Enough – The Greatest Showman Soundtrack
I did say that I played this entire album on repeat for a good few days. Also, I did just jump back to sporadically throughout the year so I’m not surprised that two of my top 10 Spotify songs were from this album. I am surprised by which ones however! Not this one though! I love a good ballad, and the way that Loren Allred performs this is magical. I don’t think I do it half as much justice, but that won’t stop me from belting it out in my car!
4) The Phoenix – Fall Out Boy
Please note this is the start of some good throwbacks! This is my favourite Fall Out Boy song. I just love the initial line. “PUT ON YOUR WAR PAINT!” It gets me in such a good mood and gets me going. It’s why this is in my exercise playlist. This song comes on and I can’t help but to start running and feeling pumped up with it. I turn up the volume and let myself get into the rhythm of the run.
5) I’m Gay – Bowling For Soup
Again this is one of my songs from my exercising playlist. Since I picked up my gym routine, and started running again in October, I have been playing it a lot more. This song always makes me feel really happy when it comes on. Even if I’m getting towards the last 1km of my run, and my legs are aching and my lungs are burning, this song uplifts me and helps me power on for just a little bit longer.
6) Decode – Paramore
This one is from my main music playlist that has grown over the years. With so many songs on it, it’s weird that this is one that has been able to break into my top 10. However, it has been a constant companion since its release in 2008. Even before Spotify, I was playing this on youtube constantly. There’s just something about Hayley’s voice that keeps me coming back to Paramore, even if it is more for the throwbacks than the newer stuff. Sorry!
7) My Last Breath – Evanescence
This is probably the biggest throwback in the entire list. A weird fact with this song is that I’ve often said I’d like to have it played at my funeral. Mainly for the title more than anything. Much like Jamiroquai’s Deeper Underground… This song has followed me since 2005, when I used to sing and dance in my bedroom to it as teenager. I think my mum and step-dad are both happy that I don’t do that any more! This has always been one of my favourite songs from the album. I love listening to it whenever it comes on, and it may be one of those elusive songs that I never skip.
8) The Only Difference Between Martyrdom and Suicide Is Press Coverage – Panic! At The Disco
Remember the days of novel length song titles? Why did that ever stop? I’m not sure how this one popped up in my top 10 Spotify songs of 2018, I didn’t realise I had listened to it that much. I do love a good throwback Panic! song, but didn’t realise that this was my go to. It seems this playlist has open up my eyes to my own self.
9) Set It All Free – Sing Soundtrack
This may seem like a weird choice, it’s not a recent film so it’s not like I’ve only just discovered it. However, it was only last year that I looked for it to add to my Spotify list. My nephew loves to watch films, and there was a period where he loved this one. It was one of these run-throughs that I realised how much I enjoyed it. I love being able to sing this at the top of my voice and let my inner pop-rock chick run free.
10) Time Is Running Out – Muse
I’m surprised that this is the Muse song that has managed to just get itself into my top 10 Spotify songs, my favourite is Plug In Baby. But I think this is because it’s in my exercising playlist, whereas I don’t think I put Plug In Baby in there. It has a really good beat if you’re trying get into the zone with any exercising. It is also the first ever Muse song I ever listened to, back in my Kerrang stage of life. Anyone else remember the video of them in a war council?
I feel like my top 10 songs from last year took a strange drop down. It seems clear that my inner 2006 emo girl is still alive and well, and letting those songs dominate my musical life. Maybe next year I will have broken the habit of a decade?

Hasta la fuego
