This is something that I see online all the time. Should I niche my blog? Do I need to niche my blog? Honestly, it depends on what you want from blogging. Do you want to make it your new side hustle/business? If so, niching is going to be the best way for you to go.
It will allow you to develop a target audience, and to focus on a particular area. This is great strength if you are wanting this endeavour to give you a bit of extra cash. If you’re wanting to niche or look more into the subject Vix Meldrew has some great tips, along with ABOH. But if that’s not what you’re feeling, maybe it doesn’t matter?
Have I Niched my Blog?
I’ve been writing on this blog, in one form or another, for 7 years. 7 whole years of blogging. I never started it to make money, and although I will admit it would be nice to, it’s still not my aim for it. I made the decision a while ago to not niche down because I didn’t want to feel like I was restricted in the type of posts that I could add to my blog. And I didn’t want to feel like I was forcing myself to write about things, that I may end up becoming bored with.
Yes, it has affected me in regards to the amount of traffic that receive. You’d think after 7 years that I’d have a decent readership each month, but that’s not the case. As well as not having high views each month, I also don’t seem to have that many loyal readers. Does it make me feel good? Not really, sometimes it makes me feel like giving up completely. But at the same time, I do like the freedom it brings me.
Am I Being Held Back?
It’s difficult to think if not having a set niche is affecting me. I mean, it’s not helping me try and use this as a second income, but it’s not stopping me from posting what I want. I think sometimes you can fall into the trap of comparing yourself with others and it can make you feel bad. However, I think I’m able to thrive in my writing style.
My blog is a place for me to write, to put my thoughts out into the world. The fact I can do so, with so much ease is something that I will always feel happy about it. If I could go back and make myself fit a niche, would I do it? I think it would depend on the day that you ask me! Honestly, I think I could potentially niche myself a little without it being too difficult. But then there would be some very out there posts being added every so often. So maybe I should stay as I am.
Should I Niche my Blog?
If you are wanting to decide on what is the best course of action for you, you need to look at where you want your blog to take you. The blogosphere is not the same place as it was when I initially started, sometimes to my dismay. So if you are wanting to hit the big leagues, it may be the better option to find a niche, but make it unique. There are countless beauty bloggers, travel bloggers, and fashion bloggers out there already. Find a way to make people want to come to you.
If you are wanting to blog because you want to write your thoughts down for people to stumble across, you may be okay without the niche. Just don’t let the numbers start to get you down!
Hasta la fuego

I try to have a certain niche on my blog but it not my cup of tea I get bored easily but I think having not too many niches or not having niches is more entretaining for me as a reader. xx
That’s interesting to read. I feel like a lot of people like to see someone who writes about a similar thing so they know what they’re talking about. It’s good to see that different topics entertain people 🙂 xx
